One of our experimenters, Vendel in Rosebud, Texas, has an auto shop where he performs cell installs and things related. He came up with a great modification to the COSM that we've coined the Vendel-Mod which provides low voltage pull-up. Here is a link to his mod from atfab's web site:

Here is a somewhat blurry (sorry) photo of the simple modification I made to my COSM-IIA's circuit board to implement the Vendel-mod. The modification consisted of soldering the anode lead of a 1N4001 diode into pin #5 of the NE555N chip, bending the lead approximately 85-90 degrees so that it clears the surface of the PCB, installing heat-shrink to insulate it from any chance of shorting, then connecting to a low-volt adjustment potentiometer and then on to the wiper of the power output potentiometer. This is a very easy modification to make and adds low-voltage pull-up to the COSM:
